The Don and Catharine Bryan Cultural Series is thrilled to celebrate a decade of extraordinary music with our upcoming Surf and Sounds Chamber Music Series. For our 10th anniversary, we are honored to present a series of special performances featuring the acclaimed tenor Tshombe Selby alongside the Surf and Sounds Piano Quintet.

From his roots in Manteo, North Carolina, Tshombe Selby has soared to the heights of the Metropolitan Opera stage in New York. With a career spanning performances around the globe, Tshombe returns to Dare County to grace us with his incredible talent in two exceptional concerts.

About Tshombe Selby:

Tshombe Selby is a proud native of Manteo, North Carolina. His musical journey began at the tender age of 5 when he joined his church’s youth choir. By 15, he was the Minister of Music at his church, having taught himself to play the piano and performed at numerous community events. Tshombe holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Performance from Elizabeth City State University, where he excelled as a tenor soloist and choir president. His opera career took flight with an apprenticeship at the New York Opera Studio, leading to performances at Carnegie Hall and with opera companies worldwide. Tshombe continues to champion social justice causes, lending his powerful voice to the Poor People’s Campaign and other initiatives. He currently studies voice with Ms. Carol Castel and coaches with professionals from the Metropolitan Opera and The Juilliard School.

In addition to these special performances featuring Tshombe Selby, the Surf and Sounds Chamber Music Series will showcase our talented Surf and Sounds String Quartet.

About the Performers:

Jake Fowler, Music Director, cello
 Founder of the Surf and Sounds Chamber Music Series, Jake Fowler has an illustrious career that includes tenured positions with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and international tours with the Shen Yun Performing Arts Orchestra.

Katie Hyun, violin
 An Astral Artists’ 2016 National Auditions winner, Katie Hyun is known for her versatility and passion for social justice through music. She is the founder and director of Quodlibet Ensemble.

Siwoo Kim, violin
 Described by The New York Times as “incisive” and “compelling,” Siwoo Kim is a sought-after soloist and chamber musician, and co-founder of VIVO Music Festival.

Luke Fleming, viola
 Praised for his “glowing refinement” by The Philadelphia Inquirer, Luke Fleming is the founding artistic director of the Manhattan Chamber Players and Crescent City Chamber Music Festival.

Dr. Amanda Halstead, piano
 An active soloist and chamber musician, Dr. Amanda Halstead collaborates with prestigious ensembles such as the National Symphony and the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra. She is also a dedicated music educator.
